LOVE

We search for love all our lives and fate plays with our emotions
like the wind plays in the trees and we bare our hearts and souls
to our lovers and tangle ourselves in the sheets and each other
and spend our bodies in sweet passion and excess

And as we drift apart we salve our raw wounds
with passion and the bottle and work and night
after night we ply our new lovers with saccharin lies
and hide our tears in the heat of sweet release and sweat

And alone in our rooms while sleep toys with our minds
we wonder what if and why and call our bitter-sweet
memories to mind and curse them and cry
and wonder why

And the fortunate few who find true love and the many
we believe have but have not spend long years in seeming
harmony or quiet strife smiling bravely for all to see
and all any wanted was love, lasting or bittersweet, only love
